Hastings is in the Hawkes Bay Region, on the East Coast of the North Island. There’s a lot of food production that goes on in Hastings: stonefruit, kiwifruit, veges and it’s known mostly for its red wine!

Climb or drive up Te Mata Peak (399m) which offers stunning views of the region especially at sunrise and sunset!

Visit Cape Kidnappers via nearby Clifton to see scarred white cliffs and a massive gannet colony.

In a region famous for it’s wine, join in a winery biking tour, a shuttle bus, or guide yourself with a map from the local information centre.

Ride the Hawke’s Bay Cycle Trail alongside the coast and vineyards to see the region at a slower pace.

On Sunday’s from 8:30 am – 12:30 pm there’s the Hawkes Bay Farmers Market in Hastings – there’s a big range of local produce.

17km away from Hastings you can wander the walking tracks through the Pekapeka Wetlands, full of birds and a very different landscape experience.

Off The Track Restaurant has nice views over Hastings, good food and excellent service. Mid-range prices. Pays to reserve before arriving!

Te Awa Winery and Cellar Door has a lovely laid-back setting for lunch or dinner. Good food and plenty of wines (with tastings available too).

Focal Point Cafe (attached to the Cinema) has a cabinet full of goodies, open daily from 8 am – 9 pm.

Star of India is a great value option, serving delicious Indian food.

Rush Munros is an ice cream parlour, serving their own delicious, organic ice cream! Open 11 am – 6 pm daily.

Hastings: Sleep

Hastings Top 10 Holiday Park ($) have tent sites, cabins, and apartments. Set on 4 hectares of land, it feels remote (yet not far at all from the action in Hastings).

The Rotton Apple Backpackers ($) is much better than the name makes out! Great facilities, and centrally located with friendly staff!

Meadowood House ($$) is a gorgeous option in Fernhill, 15-minutes from Hastings. Memorable art deco here, set in the vines with breakfast provided! Oh and there’s a jacuzzi …

Te Mata B&B ($$) is a nice option in Havelock North, 10 minutes from Hastings. The rooms have vintage feel, there’s a salt water pool for use in summer, and breakfast is included!
